MHFB Ensembles

Over our 40 year history, the Mile High Freedom Bands have continued to grow to reach more of our community, share our music with the world, and welcome new members to our family. We currently have five core ensembles as a part of the MHFB organization.

MHFB Winds Symphonic Band

MHFB Winds was one of the first ensembles of the organization. Today, it’s our full symphonic band and our largest ensemble, playing four major events each season including some our biggest – Spooktacular and Melodies of Pride. Winds often collaborates with other musical organizations and features guests artists and an annual composition commission for new and diverse composers!

MHFB Swing Jazz Band

As the MHFB organization began to grow in the early part of the 21st century, there were increasing calls for a jazz ensemble to compliment MHFB Winds and Corps. In came MHFB Swing in 2010! Swing is often found out in the community performing for various events, including the opening of the Burrell School for the Arts, the South by Southeast Festival, LGBTQ+ Pride events across Denver.

MHFB Corps Marching & Pep Bands

MHFB Corps was the first part of the Mile High Freedom Bands organization, performing our very first performance at the Denver Gay Rodeo. Throughout the years, Corps could be found almost everywhere in Denver from Pride celebrations to the St. Patrick’s Parade. In fact, MHFB is the oldest LGBTQ+ band in the world (that we’re aware of) to continually participate in a local St. Patrick’s Day parade!

MHFB STRINGS ORCHESTRA

In 2022, MHFB launched our newest ensemble – MHFB Strings ! For the first time, we’ve brought the regular orchestral instruments of violin, viola, cello, and bass into the MHFB family. As one of the only non-auditioned string ensembles in the region, MHFB Strings aims to provide a welcoming space for musicians of all abilities and support another musical area of the LGBTQ+ community.

MHFB Youth SUMMER CAMP

MHFB Youth camp  is a totally free week-long experience for high school students. Students can choose to participate in any or all of the four program areas. The program is be open to any LGBTQ+ and ally student who will be in high school in the upcoming school year as well as seniors that have just graduated! Seniors can even earn a scholarship to the college of their choice in any major!
