The Mile High Freedom Bands (MHFB) is seeking an Associate Artistic Director to lead MHFB Swing, our jazz big band, and support the artistic team in advancing our mission of fostering community, inclusivity, and musical excellence. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and passionate music director to shape the future of our jazz ensemble while contributing to the broader success of MHFB.

POSITION OVERVIEW
🎵 Lead MHFB Swing
Rehearse and conduct the jazz ensemble, selecting repertoire that aligns with MHFB’s mission and artistic vision.
🤝 Support the Artistic Team
Assist in programming, collaboration, and initiatives that support the full MHFB organization.
🎤 Engage the Community
Build connections with musicians, audiences, and community partners to enhance the ensemble’s impact.
🎼 Champion New Works
Participate in commissioning projects, including the upcoming jazz band commission for MHFB’s 42nd season.

Key Responsibilities
Conduct weekly rehearsals and direct MHFB Swing performances.
Select diverse and engaging repertoire for seasonal concerts and events.
Collaborate with the Artistic Director and artistic team on programming and organizational initiatives.
Foster an inclusive and supportive rehearsal environment for all musicians.
Work with the Operations team to coordinate logistics for concerts, rehearsals, and outreach events.
Assist with MHFB’s community engagement and fundraising efforts as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Degree in Music or Music Education (or equivalent experience).
Experience directing or conducting a jazz big band, including knowledge of jazz styles, rehearsal techniques, and big band pedagogy.
Passion for community music-making and working with musicians of diverse skill levels.
Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle challenges with professionalism and composure.
Ability to work collaboratively within a volunteer-led organization.
Compensation and Commitment
- This is a part-time contracted position (1099) that is paid a $400 monthly stipend.
- Rehearsals are held weekly in Denver on Tuesday evenings, with performances throughout the year.
- The Associate Artistic Director is expected to participate in organizational meetings and planning discussions with the MHFB artistic team.
