Derek Hebert

Derek Hebert joined MHFB in early 2012 and in April 2014, was appointed Artistic Director of the Mile High Freedom Bands and Director of Freedom Winds.  Derek also serves on several band committees, as an ex-officio member of the MHFB Board of Directors, and as the bands’ Technology Coordinator.

Derek grew up along the gulf coast of Louisiana, and in 2006, he and his husband Brad traded in the Cajun bayous for the Colorado mountains.  Outside of MHFB, he is the Director of Bands and Performing Arts Department Head for The Academy in Westminster, Colorado.  On a daily basis, he works with students of all levels that make up Academy’s instrumental ensembles.  He is an active clinician and adjudicator across Colorado.  In his free time, he enjoys exploring all the Colorado outdoors has to offer, from hiking to skiing and biking.

Derek earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree with honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Master of Music degree in Conducting from Colorado State University where he studied conducting under Prof. Wes Kenney, Dr. Rebecca Phillips, Dr. James Kim, and Dr. Dwight Bigler.  He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Colorado Music Educators Association, American String Teachers Association, Colorado Bandmasters Association, and the International Trombone Association.
