Derek Hebert

Derek Hebert joined MHFB in early 2012 and in April 2014, was appointed Artistic Director of the Mile High Freedom Bands.  He is the principal conductor of Freedom Winds and Freedom Corps.  Derek also serves on several band committees, as an ex-officio member of the MHFB Board of Directors, and as the bands’ Technology Coordinator.

Derek grew up along the gulf coast of Louisiana, and in 2006, he and his husband Brad traded in the Cajun bayous for the Colorado mountains.  Outside of MHFB, he is also the Director of Bands & Orchestras and Performing Arts Department Head for The Academy in Westminster, Colorado.  On a daily basis, he works with students of all levels that make up Academy’s band and orchestra ensembles.  He is an active clinician and adjudicator across Colorado.  In his free time, he enjoys exploring all the Colorado outdoors has to offer, from hiking to skiing and biking.

Derek is an honors graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder in Music Education and is in his final year pursing his Masters in Music Education at Colorado State University.  He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Colorado Music Educators Association, American String Teachers Association, Colorado Bandmasters Association, and the International Trombone Association.
